Holding his torch aloft, the old dwarf stared into the dark beyond the burning light. Pebbles jumped upon the ground, causing his gaze to drop to the stone. He wiggled his toes in his sandals and shifted his position. The pebbles stopped their dance and he stepped deeper into the darkness. There was nary a sound coming from the long corridor that descend and curved to the left. Usually, at this time of day, there was at least the scurry of a rat, the scrape of a scale as a salamander slipped past, or the shuffle of a digging mole. Today, there was silence.
Lifting his torch once more, he called into the dark, “Is someone there?”
As predicted, nothing responded but the ground shivered once more. Dust shifted down from above this time, a curtain of soot, sand, and silt that threatened his precious torch. The pebbles jumped upon the stone with that same rhythmic staccato. Tck Tck Tck.
Thinking back, the archaeologist felt a thrill of excitement run through him. A few years back they had found the Demon Door but never before had there been tremors felt within the tomb. Surging forward, he went to see what he could find.
