UPDATE: GM Auchand announced a major update and improvement for the Flaming Aura spell (on granite triangles and more) spell number 1706 from the Arcane Circle. It will fire off every 10 seconds for 3 minutes for heat crit damage, the target has an SMR roll. It’s been reclassified a BUFF spell, and several critters were tweaked who use this spell, too. He said: “Granite triangles should feel a lot more fun to use now.” More Details:

Flaming Aura (1706) has been updated to improve its efficacy and put the spell more in line with other current spells.

Previously, it had a 50% chance to flare every 30 seconds for 3 minutes for a random heat critical. The target had no chance to save against this damage if randomly selected.

Now the spell fires every 10 seconds for 3 minutes. The random target has an SMR roll to determine whether or not they are damaged. On a failed roll, they will take a standard flare of heat damage. This spell has been reclassified as a buff rather than as a war spell, so it can be dispelled. The spell can also be cast in sanctuaries, but it will only deal damage if you are in a non-sanctuary room where magic is allowed.

Because of the improved efficacy of this spell, dreadsteeds–which innately cast it–have had their chance to cast the spell reduced. Disir, the other major creature to use the spell, cast it as part of their normal spell rotation.

Q&As:

This spell should properly flare against creatures only when cast by animates.

The heat damage is a normal heat crit, so anything that reduces heat criticals should work against it.

I’ve tested out the spell a bit, and granite triangles should feel a lot more fun to use now.

It only triggers against bolt and warding spells, per my dark master @Estild.
