Wecome to the TownCrier’s Discord Digest! In this space, we at the TownCrier will attempt to provide a daily digest of select conversations at the Official GemStone IV Discord server from 10 pm EST the night previous to 10 pm EST the night of. Not all conversations will be reported and we will endeavor to utilize a neutral tone (although our unique senses of humor may show through).

#premium
- Naamit asks if some merchants offering body-build feature alterations can come to the Premium Festival this year and GM Quilic responds that in general, it’s on his list to look into in the coming months (no guarantees!) whether at the Premium festival or elsewhere. These types of feature alterations are very rare and limited and approval may not be granted to offer the service.

Ranger Requests
Sins brings up their beef with the high level ranger spell 625 Nature’s Touch being dedicated to allowing rangers to cast indoors, something they state should just be allowed without the need for a spell (using the example of sorcerer’s with arms coming out of thin air anywhere) while 630 Animal Companion is also practically-speaking a limited use spell. That counts as two “higher level” spell slots that are not taken up by spells that are not incredibly useful on an ongoing basis.
Additional thoughts:
-
- Puptilian adds that an interesting update to 630 could be with a fully bonded AC and enough lores, you could call a swarm of animals to attack all present enemies.
- Sins details their wishlist for ranger spells and also states they would be okay with rangers not having shield skills and instead having brawling and other close-quarters unarmed combat skills as “rangers are elite fighters, not some local militia.”

- Foraging: Tsalin resurrects the foraging discussion from yesterday by quoting information on what the positive and negative factors are for foraging from the wiki.
- The above ranger discussion combined with Naamit mentioning another profession-specific limitation wherein bards cannot wear helmets and renew their songs prompted me to wonder what other profession-specific limitations exists.
- HebrewToYou states that “musical instruments should act as a bards runestaff“. I’m not the only one wondering what that would look like for parries!
- Sins makes sure to thank the GM who put custom named and designed falchion “Nature’s Revenge” into the treasure system. Turns out it was GM Avaluka who designed this beaut:
- a leaf-etched mithglin falchion with a branching crossguard
Covering the tip of the blade to the tang, an intricate design of falling leaves has been etched with great detail into the mithglin of this falchion. Thin strips of interwoven steel make up the crossguard, the metal having been formed into the spreading branches of a tree. Tiny carvings along the surface of the ironwood hilt give the impression of bark, while the pommel has been whittled into a gnarled mass of roots that surrounds a square-cut emerald.

- HebrewToYou suggests that sais and main-gauches provide extra DS based on two weapon combat skill instead of a flat +10.
- Sins had some questions about the READ
- mechanic and how to add this functionality to items
. GM Tivvy answered that some merchants will add a READ- function to items in game
as an alteration or customization to the SHOW/LOOK while some consider that doing both at the same time would be two alterations/customizations. Raelee adds that when this is done, the READ- can be functionally in any SPEAK option and only people who can use that particular SPEAK option can read it.
#help
- GM Naos announces that Icemule should now have potions available in the guild shop; it was an oversight that they were missing.
#festivals-and-events
- GM Quilic reminds people that there are only 53 days until Premium Fest! He also expands that there will be an integrated storyline accessible to all levels plus at least one brand new thing.
#roleplay-in-elanthia
Questions of the Day
- “Does your character interact with their magic? If so, how? Do you roleplay taking rote magic and expanding on it?” [Alisaire]
- “To what extent have you fleshed out the details your character(s) family? How much impact does their family history have on their in-game life?” [Raelee]
- “My question is, as always, if someone were going to play your character in a movie (actor can be alive or dead) who would it be, and if your character had a theme song what is it?” [Nimaera]

- Arianiss inspires conversation on whether or not we can claim ties to former Illistim Argent Mirrors (example: Linsandrych) in backstories. In general, it’s discussed that this is appropriate as the Argent Mirrors are not dynastic at this point, as long as the relationship is a distant one.
- Arianiss also asked if “Lorminstra would be capable of putting someone’s soul/spirit/mind into a brand new body, younger body?” General consensus? Yes.
- Xorus, Lylia, Erek, and GM Xeraphina (unofficially) discuss the function of the valences and how “lesser demon” is problematic in our lore as it “has been warped beyond all meaning” [Xorus]. Are demons sentient? Elemental? Sorcerous? How do the valences play into this? Xorus’ collection of information on the Cosmology of Elanthia may be helpful here.
- “The original concept had valences at differing energy levels, with loosely the outer valences housing the more powerful demons. That concept may not have been followed as the system was built, and that’s ok as long as someone maintained some sort of “this is why this demon comes from here” document, which I am not sure existed. That said, it’s just a loose guideline (insert jokes about “the Pirate Code of Morgan and Bartholomew” here), so who’s to say that those valences have to be strictly homogeneous in their nature? I imagine some sort of mixing could occur, and truthfully I never really envisioned a “one valence is for one type of demon” thing.” [Erek]
