Plaitime was not a savvy man in life. To say that he was uncouth would be like saying that the moons are far. What I mean to say is that calling him uncouth didn’t cover the depth of slovenliness, griminess, or overall unkemptness of his stature, physique, and demeanor.
Upon arriving in Naidem, as many denizens do, he was gifted with one thing that many other new arrivals are not gifted with. A name. Now, the way he came by this name, which in fact was his own name, was rather unique. At least compared to past arrivals.
You see, he was first found belly and face down in the Gleyminn Anni River, his head bumping into the mushroom cap boats. He was pulled sodden from the lapping waters and rolled onto the ground. As is typical of a new arrival, especially one that arrives unconscious, his pockets were emptied and much to the surprise of those that found him, a name took shape.
Scoundrel. Wanted. Thief. His pockets were full of wanted posted all in the name of Plaitime. As you can imagine, our kind denizens of Naidem tend to stick to their own and, unfortunately for Plaitime, he wasn’t what this group considered, “their own.” So, he woke with a pile of papers on his wet chest, no idea who he was, where he was, or why he seemed to have a second smile.
His first days in this place were confusing, the first months befuddling, but slowly over the course of his first year, he started to know where things were. Pawnshop here, he rather liked that place. Jail here, he had an unhealthy fear of that place that he couldn’t quite put his finger on. And so and so forth.
One day, he found himself in the Neighborhood of Fate’s Holding where he found a shop that suddenly made him feel at home. Was it the dress hanging on the wall that triggered a memory in the slovenly old man? Who is to say? However, as I mentioned before he was rather slovenly, grimy, unkempt, unsavvy, and decidedly uncouth. Sometimes, even death doesn’t take these traits from you.
In his second year in Naidem, Plaitime seldom left the shop and soon, as Naidem does, a second room appeared and within it was a marvel finally fit for the nobility he thought he was. Though, I must remind you, again, that he was definitely none of these things.
A peascod doublet, so fine and fancy, hung on the wall. This was something that Plaitime would come to love, almost as much as the crumped wanted posters he kept stuffed in his back pocket.
