Wyrom Says No To Cubes

Big Kahuna Wyrom says of Summit Academy, “Cubes will never be returning in that form ever again.” (That’s all the message says, but I linked it up for the skeptics…)

That’s right! Summit Academy will be our December event. Dates are still being finalized, but we will have more information for you very soon.

In addition to the services available at the past event (spell preps, swears, signature verbs, log phrases, feature pavilion [for body, distinguishing mark, and wing quirks], enhancive permanence), we’ve now added spell customizations to the available services. This pertains to things like Manna, Well of Life, Tangleweed, etc. Most, if not all, of the offerings from the last run are available this time around, and many have more options available.

We will post more information as it becomes available.

Great to hear. Customizing is the best!

Any chance there will be messaging customization for Iron Skin (1202) or Dragonclaw (1209)? If not, can that go on the future wish list? 🙂

Nothing specifically for these spells, but there are a bunch of new “ALL” spell preps.

Any chance there’s a UI upgrade for the all-spell prep phrasing selection to go along with these? It’s really great to have so many all-spell options available, but trying to switch between them on the fly is a pain without customized scripting.

Hi Haliste, I just knew I should have included a link the first time around! Sorry about that. See below for a request I put in the Game Design Discussions folder back in Feb, 2017. A few folks have asked for comparable functionality in the last year I’ve been back.

http://forums.play.net/forums/GemStone%20IV/Game%20Design%20Discussions/Developer's%20Corner%20-%20Game%20Design/view/3565

Hi, it would be very helpful if the Prep Phrase functionality could be updated so folks can mix-and-match their spell preps. For example, I want to use one all-spell prep just for a specific set of spells, another for a different set, etc. This was very easy with a macro or Lich alias when I had only one custom spell prep (turn on, prepare spell, turn off). In order to accomplish the same with multiple prep phrases though, I have to Prep Phrase On, then sort the list so the desired phrase is at the top (logic!), prepare spell, then either turn off, or re-sort, etc.

This could be greatly enhanced by the following:

1) add Default as an option to list for standard messaging (it would show for all users) so they can keep Prep Phrase On and still choose to use plain messaging on a whim
2) allow user to invoke using specific option in the list by PREP PHRASE 1, PREP PHRASE 2, PREP PHRASE 3 etc.

I don’t see any obvious negative impact to the existing logic since the system can already move through the list until it finds a valid one, or defaults to regular preparation.

Thanks!

I know I am way too late for anything in the near-term, but I’ll post this for your future file, because it seems like a good fit for Summit’s customization-palooza based on what I’ve read about it. 🙂

Since spells like Tangleweed and Call Swarm can be semi-customized via spell preps – why not add bard sonics to that as well?

I assume that all the “custom” sonics that have been created are going into a table(s) somewhere, and associated with the “owner”. It should be possible to make some semi-custom bard sonic items function similarly to the ranger weeds and swarms, so that they can be called/owned by anyone who unlocks access to them.

A semi-custom step beyond “a sonic falchion” that gives people something decent looking to carry while hoping to someday win (high chance of never) a true custom one-of-a-kind alter would be nice, especially given any other class can go to any GALD merchant and freely alter weapons and shields.

(Erek has thought-designed a system that would actually allow GALD merchants to instantly and permanently alter sonics via simple command… one can take the game designer out of the game, but his brain apparently lives there forever. 🙂 )

There are also many of us who would happily save Premium Points to pay for sonic alters, even if they were double the price of regular PP alters. 🙂 Decent looking sonics, to me, should not be an auction-level-rare thing to possess, especially since all other profs can alter their gear so easily.

GOOD! We need to not crash the silver market further with coin generator boxes again. Merchants are savvy and need to be more challenged in the manner in which they profit than just handing them a no-brainer cube of silvers.

Can there be a wps merchant though? Also, what are we doing in February now? You can tell me. I won’t say a word to anyone! (I will type leak it all)

Subj: Re: Coming soon…
This run of Summit Academy will have all of the customizations offered at the last run, and has updates to the following:

Spell Preps
Swears
Signature Verbs

Log Phrases are still available but had no updates to its options.

In addition, pre-written custom spell options are available as another automated service. This includes options for the following:

Fire Spirit
Empathic Assault
Manna
Major Sanctuary
Well of Life
Raise Dead
Hand of Tonis
Balefire
Animated Disk
Tangleweed
Grasp of the Grave
Call Swarm (no new options)
Transfer (empath only)

Any custom spell options found in the previous run’s treasure cubes are now available from the uniformed attendant in the library of Thurgine Hall.

The feature pavilion will also return, with new feature options for both Body and Wing Quirks. Distinguishing Mark features are also available, but there are no new options.

For the enhancive tokens, existing tokens (ie: those purchased previously or those received in the Simucon Goodie Bags) are eligible for the following enhancive services:

* Enhancive permanence
* Increase mana capacity (10% increments)
* Recharge (10% increments)

Moving forward, enhancive permanence will not be available. Enhancive tokens purchased for this run will be ineligible for use with the enhancive permanence option.

The fusion shaman has been hired by the Academy and will be making his debut appearance. More information to come on this.

pretty disappointing for a late second change to the enhancive tokens. You guys have a design change in mind for enhancives and that’s all good and fine, but at least give us one last chance to work on items that we’ve saved up for the last year.

I agree that there should be one last opportunity to permify enhancives.

I also wish that changes like this would be communicated more than 3 days prior to the start of an event. For example, during the previous run you could have stated, this will be the last chance to permify enhancives via tokens. That way people have the option of participating or not participating. Making the change 3 days prior to the start of the event takes away the opportunity, an that doesn’t seem fair and is frankly, frustrating.

Is it poor planning that causes situations like this or something else? I was looking forward to permifying a few things and the thought of waiting until the next EG, and trying to win 1/20 slots vs 400 people is extremely disappointing.

That’s pretty disappointing. This was literally the ONLY reason I was looking forward to the Summit Academy. I didn’t do any permifying last Academy-retrospectively, a foolish choice on my part.

I understand the Summit Academy is primarily a “role playing” enhancement event (ie, changing descriptions for spells and such) but there’s nothing wrong (I would think) with again including this service, even if for just one last time?

Will you at least consider reconsidering this decision?

Thanks, Naamit – I was just coming over here from discord (epic name, eh?) to reinforce this. Appreciate you doing so.

Red team – I know there’s all kinds of potential issues with our receiving this type of information. I’ll only state that without it, we fill in the blanks from our own limited perspective. So information flow occurs, whether it’s accurate or not. I also know risks run from losing player base to unpopular changes all the way to bearing an oft-times unpleasant burden in carrying the communication.

I’ll just say that if we’re going to lose people (of any type, F2P and subscribed player <-> GM) I feel it is the best possible case that this happen with correct information instead of speculation.

From: GS4-COASE
Subj: Re: Coming soon…
Regarding enhancive permanence, it had become an increasingly common service or the last year or two, way beyond what it was actually planned or authorized to be. It (and fusion) became increasingly notable when we were going over the 2016 auction items and various feeder items (before that too, but that was the tipping point) to the point where we increasingly found ourselves pulling back on what could be offered with respect to enhancive items because most of the balancing factors that we could add to the items could trivially be circumvented at the next event or two, either by literally orbing away most of the item or by simply applying a common service (which was getting to the point of being slipped into goody bags for basically free).

So, unfortunately, we need to pull back enhancive permanence to where we actually wanted its rarity level to be at (which, as a permanent removal of a significant item drawback, should be much rarer). In its place, we are intending to offer a less permanent item crumbliness protection service, so that if you do find a crumbly enhancive item you’d like to to keep, you can still access a fairly common service to prevent it from crumbling, but at a cost and/or effort more in-line with the benefit derived.

Again, I apologize for this, but its an unfortunate set of events that requires us to pull back on some of the excesses of enhancive item distribution that have occurred over the last few years, so that we can have more flexibility in offering new things going forward.

Are you serious? You guys sold out the game for simucoin sales and now you are going to try and close the doors on it? What are you suddenly going to try and “pull back” that’s uncontrolled?
You all decided to unleash the pay 2 win genie for the short-term benefits and now can’t handle the long-term results of it. Everyone warned you this was going to happen. Now you have to nerf everything into the ground and no one is going to be happy to keep paying when all we get is stick and no carrot.

I love how you just slide it in there at the last minute after so many people already bought things expecting to permify them this run. Hell that was the only service I even cared about. You know people hate temp padding and weighting and don’t use it, yet your idea for enhancives is to make sure they stay crumbly while making it even more expensive and tedious to manage them. We all know at this point GM speak for fairly common service is once in a blue moon if you can get insanely lucky and win one of maybe 10 slots. I’m gonna take this as a move to try to sell more pots from the simucoin store really. Game design should be about convenience and enjoyment for players not sitting there thinking up ways to make the game more tedious and expensive.

I can understand what the reasoning is, but the approach that respects your playerbase is to let them know that such an event will be the last time this service will be offered. The inconsiderate approach, is to have your playerbase collect enhancive items for a year to develop their character, and then tell them a year later than their efforts were pointless.

The option you presented Coase isn’t a solution — it’s more tedium and an extra step we must take to enjoy the game. This is a text based game in 2018 (well, in two weeks). You have a shrinking but loyal playerbase of aging gamers that have a myriad of opportunities to put there money and time elsewhere. Why would you want to make the game more tedious or less enjoyable for us, and do so with such disdain that puts months of effort to waste?

I don’t actually mind the new mechanic so much going forward next year. But I do think it’d be considerate to give us a transition period. No, I’m certainly not going to go nonlinear over the question…but I (again) encourage you to consider allowing this service one more time. We (the players) can and will adjust to the new system going forward, but it seems to me the introduction of the new system would be be less disconcerting if you accommodated us here.
