Progress on Meteor Can Now Be APPRAISED

Per the KBD Wyrom: the meteor can now be APPRAISED for some general messaging on how far along you are. Since this was added after the fact, you won’t be able to gauge how it was decreasing, but you can keep an eye on it going forward.

A colossal meteor has been birthed from a swirling rift in the sky! The ominous web has captured the meteor, but for how long? Doomsayers, extraplanar monstrosities, and spiders battle it out in the sky. Unfortunately for adventurers, you are enemies to all sides!

Will you be able to destroy the meteor before it’s too late? Will you save the world?

Plat’s solution:

Issalya gestures at a colossal glaes-covered meteor.
Issalya throws her arms skyward!
>
You gesture at a colossal glaes-covered meteor.
You throw your arms skyward!
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
>
A billowing cloud of steam spirals around and obscures Qualeric’s form as he utters a short chant in elven.
>
Issalya exclaims, “Run!”
>
Qualeric gestures at a colossal glaes-covered meteor.
Qualeric throws his arms skyward!
>
Motes of silvery light sparkle across Andelara’s skin, twinkling like stars, as she prepares a spell…
>
Andelara gestures at a colossal glaes-covered meteor.
Andelara throws her arms skyward!

~Issalya (and then we all ran)

You see High Inquisitor Brinret Ithillote the Executor of Vengeance.
She appears to be of elven descent.
He is very tall and appears to be full grown.
You whisper aloud, “I’m so confused right now.”

I’d like to give a quick recap for those that missed the story aspect of the meteor coming into existence. I’ll dial back to the web blanketing the sky.

Spiders created the web and invaded the night it appeared. They were able to travel very quickly across Elanthia, so they moved from town to town. The cocoons that are ending up in treasure chests are from the web in the sky. There isn’t much “story” here, but that’s where things began.

Yesterday, the rift opened up, and a meteor was pushed out of it. Doomsayers summoned it. The spiders strengthened their web and captured it, but it’s not going to last forever. A byproduct of the meteor are the extraplanar creatures that are coming from whatever plane of existence the meteor came from. None of these creatures are friendly to each other, so each have their own agenda. You are facing 3 forces.

I heard someone ask, “If the spiders created this web, why are they attacking us?” Well the spiders aren’t allies with adventurers. They are cocooning the world and trying to kill everyone. The doomsayers are also trying to end the world by sending that meteor into the planet. And finally, the extraplanar creatures are just doing what extraplanar creatures do.

Some other noteworthy oddities. The meteor is covered in glaes, but glaes is volcanic rock/glass. Meteors also played a role in GemStone’s past. During the opening of the rift, there were some odd temporal issues.

Thank you for the recap and noteworthy oddities. I had missed some of this and was puzzled by the spiders attacking as well.

Wouldn’t letting the meteor kill us all save a step? Is this a super plot from Arachne to betray us all? If the web is that strong, can we use what’s left to build superwalls for cities?

My paladin was hoping he could cut the webbing now that all the energy has been taken out of the things fall, and just let it drop the rest of the way to the mountains below. Who would notice anyway? Doesn’t seem to be any mechanical way to do that though, so QQ.

Thank you for this! I’ve put in probably 6 hours over the weekend (and I know there are folks that have put in way more than I have) and while the GM interactions are fun it does become a bit discouraging when there is no indication of progress after all the time and effort that has been spent.

A few thoughts,

fragments chipping off as souvenirs would be of interest and a sense of progress. Has the web or meteor altered the day/night messaging at all? I figured we’d have been in a perpetual haze.

There is messaging when you gaze into the night sky.

>You gaze up into the heavens scanning for the moon Makiri…
Makiri is simply too small to make out.

A colossal meteor appears captured in the spidersilk above, but it is slowly descending toward Elanthia! Looming over the meteor is a swirling violet and cerulean rift.

Summer is here again, oh, Koar,
Webs been here for a week or more,
I hope she holds on a little longer
Let us smash it on a long summer day
Made of glaes, not of clay
I’ve been bustin’ up this chunk of ore

Rock in the sky keeps on turnin’
I don’t know where it’ll be tomorrow
Rock in the sky keeps on turnin’

I’ve been trying to save my home
Got to break it before too long
We can’t take this very much longer
I’m slammin on the rock in a web
Worried I’ll never see my home again
The mornin’ sun is risin’
It’s kissing the day

[Chorus]

Rock in the sky keeps on turnin’
I don’t know where it’ll be tomorrow
Rock in the sky keeps on turnin’

Oh, the world could be ending!
Here we are just fending
Off a certain rocky doom!

But until the world stops turning,
Or ends in volcanic, meteoric, burning,
Fight on atop this heavenly loom!

Subj: Meteor broken
This morning around 10:45 EST, we broke into the meteor. Inside was a spinning crystal core, an ancient being that attacked us and we slew, and a number of broken spider charms. We shattered the core and a forlorn spirit appeared. He spoke the name “Fraen Wasstont” and said he’d been there for over 10,000 years. He also said that the spider charms were originally from the meteor, and that the meteor was from Elanthia but not from our time. He begged for release and Heartfire (rather precipitously) killed him. The meteor then broke apart and we all fell to earth. The spidersilk web then tore apart and disappeared from the sky.

A bit of research reveals that Fraen Wasstont was the author of “The Journey Home,” and that title was inscribed inside the meteor. A fragment of that poem was written on the glaes spider charms.

Here’s what the old charms looked like:

The charm is crafted of flawless glaes formed into a circle. Delicate strands of spidersilk wind around the deep azure rim, creating a small but spectacular web within the frame. At the center of the web is a tiny smoke grey spider.

Along the rim, a few words have been engraved.
>read charm
Along the edge of the circle, a few words have been engraved…

“Many paths lead home for those of courage.”
>turn charm
You turn a deep azure glaes spider charm over.
>l charm

The charm is crafted of flawless deep azure glaes, formed into a circle. A piece of parchment slipped under the rim of the charm is visible beneath the clear crystal back.

On the parchment, some words have been penned in an elegant, barely-visible hand.
>read charm
Tiny, exquisitely-formed letters fade into view on the parchment back of your glaes spider charm…

“Follow me,” said the spider to the unenlightened sprite,
“To lands of bold adventure, of darkness and of light.
Join me in my web,” she urged, “We’ll be so happy there.
Your fantasies await you, there in my dreaming lair.”

As you read, the verse fades into invisibility once again…
>read charm
Tiny, exquisitely-formed letters fade into view on the parchment back of your glaes spider charm…

“Though quaking with uncertainty the sprite did as she bade
– Following the fragile path of silver thread she made.
Until at last he turned along the final twisting strand
To find he’d journeyed far to reach his own beloved land.

– from “The Journey Home”
by Fraen Wasstont
Early Fourth Age

As you finish reading, the poem fades into invisibility once again.
