To the people of Ta’Vaalor,

Late last evening, the Captain of the Lake of Fear ferry was found wandering aimlessly into the Ravelin. Incoherent and near death, the Captain was able to give bits and pieces about what happened.

The freeze happened so quickly, they had no time to react. The force of the ice crushed the ferry with ease, and all hands were tossed into the semi-solid mass that was once the Lake of Fear. The Captain kept his wits about him and managed to move across the more solid areas and worked his way toward shore. What happened next is still unclear, as the Captain will only speak of the screams of his crew and the cold.

With this news, the Crown declares both the ferry and her crew lost, and extends its deepest condolences to the families of the crew and commends them for their years of service.

His Majesty King Qalinor the Sovereign Commander of the Crimson Legions

With apologies to Gordon Lightfoot…

The legend lives on from the Silvaeraend on down,
Of the big body of water, Lake of Fear.
The lake, it is said, ne’er gives up her dead,
When the cold of dire magics turn drear.

With a full complement of crew, heading in to the shore,
The Ferry went down, crushed and freezing.
That good ship and crew, lost stern to fore,
Her Captain wand’ring ’round, shocked, disbelieving.

It seems Vaalor has gone soft. A captain who is the sole survivor ought to be under arrest awaiting court martial.

The captain used to be a soldier in the Vaalorian army. Even if he no longer served the army, he still served the King and should be held accountable for his actions. The ferry captain appears to have violated laws of admiralty — His actions, inaction and desertion resulted in the loss of life and destruction of the ferry, which was owned by the King.

The captain needs to be questioned.

1) The captain is known for plying his crew with alcohol to excess. The crew was likely all in their cups that evening (captain included) when the temperatures dropped, leaving them incapable of properly navigating the boat in impending ice floe — nor able to secure their own rescue.

2) The captain frequently forced his crew to work beyond normal limits (several times per day) if bribed for a fee, which may have resulted in repetitive motion injuries to the crew. This could have prevented their ability to swim to shore or climb up onto forming ice.

3) What did the captain do with this undocumented income garnered through these bribes? Did he pay taxes on them to the Crown? Did he have a co-conspirator to help him launder the income? Is there another player at work here, to undermine the Crown’s wealth?

This may have been a preventable calamity with greater care and oversight. Promoting unfair and unsafe working conditions, taking bribes and the potential for tax evasion all indicate a grave levels of barratry, a crime considered a capital offense in other realms. These matters should be investigated and justice dealt swiftly, where due.

P.S. Isn’t it in the captain’s creed to go down with the ship?

Lol, used to be a soldier, in other words a civilian who cant be court martialed.

Yes, he serves our Sovereign , Just as all Vaalorian elves do (even though many dont rp it that way). As such he falls under the laws any civilian of Vaalor does.

He didnt abandon the ferry either. The freeze came in so quickly that it shattered the ferry, tossing him snd his crew out of it. Cant go down with the ship when there is no ship to go down with.

1. Drinking or not, the ice flow happened so quickly there was nothing anyone could do. Matter of fact, up until the sudden freeze, him and his crew worked tirelessly to provide the service, even in the freezing temperstures that led to the incident.

2. Hard work is not unfamiliar to Vaalorians, especially a veteran of our Sovereign’s army. Remember they have been doing this for a decade or so, if that work didnt prepare their backs and arms to climb to shore, nothing would.

3. Should be investigated what he did with the bribes. Could be he was given permission to take them. No proof has been provided to show his actions to be illegal, to include laundering the money, or presence of co-conspititors.

In closing i move to have the Captain exonerated of any wrong doing that led to the loss of life and property on the Lake of Fear, which was caused by nature or outside forces. On the matter of monies taken as bribes or tips, i move that a complete investigation be conducted before bringing formal charges.
