From the journal of Oubar Il’Prelay, Originator of White Haven

An eventful night last night, to be sure, and one that seems to have left more questions than answers in our minds. An evening spent in prayer and contemplation has not clarified anything, unfortunately.

Last night in Town Center, voices were heard from the shadows. The voices seemed eerily similar to the voices of the bandits who attacked recently, so we were all understandably on edge. The voices demanded the tome, which seemed to reinforce the notion that we were dealing with the same folk. There was some chaos, as some of the residents issued threats, or ultimatums, and the voices didn’t do much more than jeer at us and issue threats of their own. When it was made clear that we were not willing to hand over the tome (indeed, that we had no way to do so even if we wished), things turned violent.

Shadowy figures started to materialize just long enough to slash throats, killing several of our number, then vanishing once more before any retribution could be sought. I myself was a victim of one such attack, yet through the efforts of Brokk, I was able to get back into the fray. At this point, a rugged bandit leader sauntered into Town Center to speak with us. He claimed to represent an organization known as The Far Market… which was apparently once known as The Fair Market. This isn’t a term that I was able to place, and nobody that I have spoken with to this point has any knowledge of it, either.

When the insinuation that the Tome might be lost was made, the leader became agitated and indicated the dome in Town Center. He claimed that its existence proved that the magic was still in flux, as well as that the Tome was still in existence. He seemed quite willing to make a deal with us in exchange for the Tome, but we had no way to provide it (and most of us had no inclination to do so). When it became clear he wasn’t going to get what he was after, his troops attacked.

As before, we quickly formed up and defended the town, making short work of the invading bandits once more. These seemed more dangerous than the last round, and leave me wondering if they perhaps have been assembling stronger troops for an all-out assault on the town.

Once the bandits had been dealt with, we searched Clovertooth Hall for some sign of the tome, but weren’t able to divine its location. All we know at this point is that Nihala has locked it away within the Hall somewhere. To my mind, that’s a perfectly safe place for it, for now. If we can’t find it, then none of us can be exposed to whatever ills it seems to impart. And we certainly can’t be forced to turn it over to the bandits, or to this Far Market, or anyone else.

Speculation is running rampant in the streets this morning. In short order I have heard folks whispering about Hibbits, and his possible involvement with this Far Market. Perhaps that’s why he was killed, and has gone missing? I also have heard grumblings about Nihala and the tome. Where did she hide it away? The Hall simply isn’t THAT large, it should be easy to track down. We also are no closer to sussing out the riddle, or the orbs, or the dome, or the penitentiary… a great many things are simply unknown at this point, and we seem to be accumulating ever more questions without any answers. I hold faith that our Town will rally together, as we always have, but it’s hard not to feel troubled at the sheer number of uncertainties that surround us these days.
