[Town Square Central]
This is the heart of the main square of Wehnimer’s Landing. The impromptu shops of the bazaar are clustered around this central gathering place, where townsfolk, travellers, and adventurers meet to talk, conspire or raise expeditions to the far-flung reaches of Elanith. At the north end, an old well, with moss-covered stones and a craggy roof, is shaded from the moonlight by a strong, robust tree. The oak is tall and straight, and it is apparent that the roots run deep.

Some town militia move hurriedly through the streets.

Some voices can be heard nearby, “…I hear Judge Renpaw is issuing some statement outside of Moot Hall shortly….”

[Town Square, East]
Here in the center of a broad plaza near the commercial area of the bazaar stands the impressive facade of the slate-roofed Moot Hall, where the citizens of Wehnimer’s Landing hold various official, religious and social functions. Facing the square are some of the town’s more prosperous shops, still doing business with the many customers who still frequent the streets at night.

A uniformed town guard arrives.

The town guard bows and nods.

The guard says, “Judge Renpaw has an announcement to make in regards to Lady Drandea. He has sent me to inform the public. The winter does not suit the Judge.”

The guard says, “The Judge thanks you for your inquiry Captain Stormyrain.”

The guard says, “Lady Drandea was held because of an alleged assault on a town militiaman, who has just recently dropped all charges.”

The guard says, “The lady will be permitted to leave the protection of the town barracks, likely tomorrow evening.”

Ysharra asks, “Permitted…?”

The guard says, “Until tomorrow night she will be set free.”

The guard says, “She has been under guard in the town barracks.”

The guard says, “In another matter…”

The guard says, “Mayor, we were recently passed a note that a message would soon be available from the Hall of Mages, and you and any you’d like should await in your office. I am afraid I do not know any other details.”

Speaking curiously to a uniformed town guard, Cruxophim clarifies, “This evening?”

The guard says, “Yes.”

The guard says, “Shortly, if you can.” The guard marches off.

[Moot Hall, Mayor’s Office]
At the varnished modwir door, a red bear skin rug stretches across the polished hardwood floor. Twin velnalin hide chairs face the Mayor’s pine desk, while behind it sits an incurvated bone armchair. A great stag’s head and a dark-framed sketch are mounted above a cobblestone fireplace set into the western wall. Refreshments are offered atop an oak bar beside a tall arched window. You also see a bone-ringed dart board, a large dog bed, a large detailed map and a basket of sticks.

From outside the office window, admist the falling snow, the sight of a sleek white falcon can be seen, soaring in the sky.

Outside the office window, the sleek white falcon circles in the night sky, seeming to swoop in closer.

Cruxophim stands up.

(Cruxophim walks calmly over to the arched window and opens it, allowing the cool night air to flood the stuffy office.)

The sleek white falcon swoops in through the window, landing on the Mayor’s desk, where it stretches and opens its talon to place a small opaque orb on the desk.

The small opaque orb begins to hum.

Images begin to swirl within the orb.

A pale mist begins to seep out from the depths of the orb, creating a shifting haze around the item and some of the desk. Appearing within the orb is the image of a slender woman, with silver-blue hair that ends sharply at her shoulders. Violet eyes stare out from a narrow face, and a deep blue robe covers what you can see of her shoulders.

Within the mist, the woman steps back, placing a small letter in the folds of her robe. As she does, you quickly make out a name at the end of the letter, signed Divone Felcroth.

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Greetings Mayor Cruxophim…and others.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “I had not expected such an audience.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “My name is Grand Magister Octaven of the Hall of Mages. I work for Archmagister Naylor.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “It has come to my attention, that an artifact of importance may be located near your town, in addition to your people having recovered a cache of plinite that had been stolen from our Hall.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Is this correct, Mayor Cruxophim of Wehnimer’s Landing.”

Speaking calmly to a pine desk, Cruxophim answers, “The plinite has been safely recovered, yes… and it, as well as the artifact you speak of, are both in the hands of the Hall even as we speak.”

Speaking calmly to a pine desk, Cruxophim assures, “All is well on that front.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “To whom currently holds the plinite and the artifact?”

Raelee says, “Grand Magister Dennet, Octaven.”

Speaking affably to a pine desk, Cruxophim answers, “I do not know, myself. But I presume as Magister Raelee says, aye.”

Raelee adds, “… I do know where they both are, as well.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Grand Magister Dennet Kestrel is in the area of Wehnimer’s Landing?”

Speaking curiously to a pine desk, Cruxophim ventures, “You were not aware of this, Grand Magister?”

Raelee says, “He has been here since the spring, Grand Magister.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “We were aware of his departure, but not his location. Thank you for your information.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Are both the plinite and artifact secure and safe at this time?”

Speaking diplomatically to a pine desk, Cruxophim inquires, “Curious that you would not be aware. Was he not assigned here?”

Speaking curiously to a pine desk, Kayse inquires, “Departure?”

Dergoatean asks, “Wasn’t Dennet… assigned? To this region? By the Hall?”

Raelee asks, “Yes, they are safe. How could you not be aware?”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “There exists an endless amount of operations and agents within the Hall, it is not a Grand Magister’s place to know the whereabouts and workings of everyone of lesser work.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Thank you for your assistance in this matter.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “It is a relief to learn that both the plinite and the artifact are secure. We will send some representatives soon to retrieve them and extend our gratitude to you Mayor Cruxophim, and your town.”

Speaking affably to a pine desk, Cruxophim assures, “But of course. We do not, after all, necessarily all live up to our reputation.”

The mist surrounding the orb begins to slowly recoil.

Raelee demands, “Grand Magister, wait.”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Yes?”

Raelee carefully says, “I believe I require an explanation… or at least orders.”

The sound of a woman’s fingers tapping idly and impatiently on a table can be heard from within the orb.

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “I do not believe any explanation is needed. We will provide all the information you need upon our arrival.”

Raelee asks, “… which is when?”

From within the orb, a woman’s voice says, “Thak you again for your assistance and your aid to the Hall of Mages.”

Speaking politely to a pine desk, Cruxophim reminds, “On that note, if you could kindly bring certifications and whatnot upon your arrival — to verify, of course — that would be lovely.”

The mist within the orb fades, as does the woman’s face, and soon the orb itself bubbles and melts away like snow.

Guys. When someone in a position of authority asks you if you have seen someone, and an incredibly valuable thing that has gone missing, the correct response is always: “I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about.”

Thanks for the update. Had to put on my fireman’s hat last night. Please, don’t point out the irony in the previous sentence. 🙂

Truth, however… in this particular case, I just presumed that Raelee or someone was going to spill the beans regardless, so there was little point. The actual denial comes later, of course, after the two mages destroy each other and half the landscape, and then we swoop in to grab the Talon.

“The Talon? Clearly destroyed in this horrific conflagration. I’m not sure why you would even think otherwise. Also, nevermind that eerie glow coming from over there somewhere.”
