Krystalena stood in King’s Court with several others discussing what they had witnessed in Glaise Cnoc cemetery moments earlier. After some deliberation it was decided that more information was needed and a missive should be written. Krystalena put quill to parchment and began to write.

To Lord Legionnaire Commander Cyik,

On Volnes, 16 Jastatos 5117, a soft wailing was heard in the direction of Glaise Cnoc cemetery. Several people in King’s Court including myself went to investigate. Just inside the cemetery and to the north west, we discovered the ghost of a Crimson Legion soldier. She said her name was Laerli. She wore a braided vaalorn circlet, a uniform jacket with knots of rank that we couldn’t count, tunic, pants and boots.

As we spoke to her, she mentioned remembering a Vathor with a flaming sword and griffins. She also mentioned things left undone and wanting a good meal.

A willow tree with a sword driven into the ground is now in Glaise Cnoc cemetery as well bearing her name.

In order to help this ghostly soldier, I formally request information on Laerli. If we could have when she served, rank, immediate commander, date of death and any other information able to be released, we may be able to aid this fallen Ta’Vaalor soldier find her final peace.

First Legionnaire Krystalena Zoktavir

Be safe. If you can’t be safe, be deadly.

Pensively he paced, pausing now and again to reread the neatly lettered parchment lying on his desk. “Think,” Cyik said aloud to himself. “You didn’t become Lord Legionnaire Commander by being a slow-witted roltonhead,” he continued his self-directed diatribe. His head was spinning, thoughts racing faster than a Neartofar troll fleeing a bonfire. “This simply cannot be real,” he thought. “Is she really returned and, if so, do I tell him?” he mused. “No,” he said aloud. “There is a time for a brazen move and this most definitely is not it. I will not act without all the facts”, he concluded. Turning to a nearby squire he snapped, “Bring me some official Legion parchment and a quill.”

Many events transpired prior to my arrival, however–

While holding vigil last night, visions were seen: we learned Laerli’s father is a blacksmith, and it was he carved the sword. He spoke of her in the past tense and wished her to rest in peace as he etched her name into the blade, implying he knew she had already passed. It leads me to believe he lodged it into the tree himself, as well. Efforts were made to locate the blacksmith, but the townsfolk an shopkeepers were already laying down for the night (quite literally). Others at the make-shift shrine suggested seeking him out was folly, so efforts were ceased.

Upon my arrival this morning, all the gifts that had piled up beneath the willow were gone. I can only hope some kind soul bundled them up for safe-keeping. I heard a masquerade ball is afoot for the weekend; it would be such a shame to lose the beautiful gown, slippers, jacket, and jewelry that had carefully selected and laid out for her.

“I have to know the truth,” he thought to himself as he arrived at his destination. As he prepared to knock the door creaked open. “She’s expecting you, do come in please and follow me,” said the housekeeping gnome.

He followed the gnome to into the library. As his escort slipped silently out, he considered the overstuffed chairs positioned just so before the fireplace. “This isn’t a social visit,” he quietly chided himself. He stood a little straighter, if that was truly possible, as he patiently awaited his host.

The High Priestess of House Vaalor entered nearly as quietly as that gnome had disappeared. Her countenance was grave, and full of concern. It gave him pause. Though this was not official Legion business, she snapped crisply to attention and saluted him. Returning the salute he solemnly asked, “Were you able to determine the veracity of the spirit’s claims”?

“I have,” Esana replied. “I spent last night in prayer and meditation. My Mistress made it known to me that Laerli is not within her domain. The spirit truly is Laerli.” She motioned to one of the chairs, “Won’t you sit,” she asked? “Gosaena chose not to grace me with any knowledge as to why Laerli did not cross over, nor how to aid her.” Esana paused, a worried crease in her brow. “I am sorry I do not have more information for you.”

Cyik nodded politely in response to Esana’s offer to sit, but remained standing. “I suppose there was a part of me that hoped it was some trickster spirit,” he said. “Thank you for confirming that it is her. Her father left the Fortress soon after her death. I will send for him.” With a final nod of appreciation, Cyik turned on his heel and left.

OOC Note: A big Thank You to Esana for allowing me to utilize her position in this manner.

Here is a log of the finale to the storyline. I really enjoy these little stories that add history to the game but we’re not having to drag bodies back or hold gates against endless wave of monsters, a lot less stressful. I came into this story half way through but am very glad I got to see the end. I wanted to share it with those who couldn’t make it. A number of players went all out to get involved. Ikkereik was there every night to help Laerli with anything she asked. Nyssia had gone all the way to the Landing to collect a specific flower for it’s meaning to place on the graves.

You say, “For those who may not have your thoughts open, Lord Legionnaire Commander Cyik is meeting Laerli’s father at Amaranth Gate.”

[Purgatory]
You see endless streaming light, and vast nothingness. You feel torn between two prophecies, each vying for your soul.
Also in the room: All the spirits of those who could not choose.
Obvious exits: light and darkness

Delicate elongated leaves on slender whips drape from the majestic old tree, evoking the image of tears on cheeks and echoing the sadness of the surroundings. Centered beneath the tree’s enveloping canopy, a single vaalorn longsword has been driven deep into the ground. Though simple in appearance, the crossguard and what is visible of the blade belie the work of an expert weaponsmith. The name Laerli flows down the blade in tiny lettering.

Lyrna says, “Any who are still with me or who would like to join me, I will head back to King’s Court momentarily.”

Esana was generous enough to provide me with the loresong to the katana so folks get a little more backstory to Laerli and how she became a ghost.

As the song begins, the katana quivers in response and the world around you shifts. An older elf stands before a young female clad in the livery of the Crimson Legion. He listens intently to the woman, a proud look upon his face. “Father”, she says, “my hundred years are nearly complete. Just a couple more months and I will be home again.” Smiling, the old elf replies, “I will have something special for you when you are.” Everything goes black as the ring of hammer on steel reverberates around you.

Willing your song deeper into the katana, your vision once again shifts. The old elf is hard at work in the forge. He confidently works the raw bluish-white vaalorn on the anvil, folding it again and again, shaping it to his satisfaction. As if sensing a presence watching, the blacksmith hovers closely over the recently shaped blade, his movements hidden from your vision. Mumbled words flit tantalizingly on the edge of hearing as a white glow emanates from the raw metal. Stepping back, the old elf raises the now crimson and ivory streaked blade, inspecting it for imperfections. “This will suit her well,” he says to no one in particular.

As you add an inquisitive melody to your song, the katana responds and the world around you changes. You are in a modest home, the decor plainly elven. The young soldier is speaking excitedly, “Father,” she says, “I have been transferred here to Ta’Vaalor.” Smiling, the old elf says, “That’s wonderful Laerli. It is comforting to know you are safe for your last few months.” The smile falls from his face as a cold wind blows through the area and a raspy voice is heard, “Surrender the Fortress and live.”

Your song takes on a life of its own. Minor chords dominate, creating a dark, foreboding feeling and your vision shifts outside one of Ta’Vaalor’s gates. Laerli lies in a pool of blood as battle rages throughout the scene. Multiple vathors cavort, in what can only be described as twisted bliss, among the fires burning unchecked upon the bridge. You watch in horror as one slams a flaming sword down with such force as to sever Laerli’s body in twain and proceeds to burn the remains beyond recall while emitting a hollow wail. The scene dissolves and the world goes black.

Your song slows to a plaintive wail, a dirge for the fallen and your vision clears. The old elf stands alone in the forge, looking down on a magnificent blade with tears in his eyes. Without a word, he wraps the blade in a piece of priceless crimson aqilorn and strides purposefully into the streets of Ta’Vaalor. Never slowing, a look of grim determination on his face, the elf makes his way to the portcullis protecting entry into Guardian Keep. A stern looking elf bearing the insignia of a Crimson Legion Officer snaps to attention and salutes the elf as he approaches.

Building to a keening wail, your song screams of loss and grief as a tears fall unchecked from your eyes. “You are certain of this old friend?” the officer asks. “I am, Lord Legionnaire Commander Cyik. Thank you for seeing me.”, the old elf says quietly. “I cannot bear to look upon it any longer,” the elf continues, “Please present it to His Majesty and ask him to distribute it appropriately at the Festival of the Fallen in memory of Laerli.” With an understanding nod, Lord Legionnaire Commander Cyik accepts the precious bundle. Without another word, the old elf turns and walks away. Your song fades into nothingness, taking the vision with it.

This was an awesome way to add to Ta’Vaalor’s lore and with a small addition to a room, commemorate a rather dark time in Elven Nation’s history. Laerli’s War, when Demons returned to the Elven Nations and Ta’Vaalor rode out to meet them.
