Flight of The Griffins Released

It’s Griffin-hatching season near Ta’Illistim, and the adult griffins are extra busy hunting for food for the nests. They are flying out on frequent runs for take-out: a cow, a dog, an unsuspecting adventurer …

Each year, when the grifflets hatch, the adult griffins fly out over the land looking for the extra food they will need. The griffins have been known to pick up cows, dogs, and even an unsuspecting adventurer.

Soldiers sent to check the nests have reported that the griffin eggs are hatching.

Those who hunt the wilds around Ta’Illistim should be aware of the extra dangers and stay alert.

If you are picked up and dropped into a nest, defeat the grifflets! Who knows, maybe you will have a moment to search around the nest and see what you can GET from the piles of bones before climbing out.

I’m hearing that a level 29 warrior got scooped up tonight and was swung at with a 380 AS by a grifflet after he was dropped in a nest. Are these supposed to level-match to their snatched victim, or is this a new random death hazard for anyone unable to handle mid-high level critters?

Walsor Gryhm says, “Hmm, a most impressive weapon of note. I’ll give you 16 silver coins for it.”
You think to yourself, “This deal is getting worse all the time.”

I’ve only tested with my two capped characters. However, the items seem to be enhancive but there also appears to be a timer on how often you can get items. I haven’t tested it enough to see how long between each GET. On another note the griffins found me up near the Keen area rather than in OTF unless I wasn’t lucky enough to get dropped in a nest there.

The griffins do not scale, please send details of what housing area you were in when you were picked up to my play.net.

how long will this event last? it’s interesting but also really annoying to constantly get picked up. i got picked up twice in less than an hour and had to kill a +9 level critter…not that much fun

also, seems like the rewards are repeating a lot? multiple people kept getting that 4x +shield use shield, some consecutively

The max it will last is a week. I had only planned on running it up to Festival of Lumnea this week. I am looking at adjusting the time for it to pick you up, and I will look into the prizes.

Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks Valyrka! Its a neat idea, just a few small tweaks would be great. Also what’s the reset time on the bones? 2nd time I got picked up, got nothing.

There is a reset time. We just tweaked the grifflets some. We adjusted the time frame for picking folks up. We are looking into an issue with dying. It should roll you out of the nest if you die so folks can find you.

It should roll you out of the nest now if you die. Also the prizes are random… if a bunch of you got the shield, its just bad luck!

Also loresing to them….

…. FLASHBACKS to GS2.

Only it was a dragon swooping down out of the sky and almost everyone died. It wasn’t seasonal. It was all the time.

You generally saw a shadow or something a split moment before it happened, but really never in enough time to take cover.

We’re having fun now!

This will only be for a short while each spring, and I am tweaking as feedback comes in!

If you are someone who died and decayed because you were not rolled out of the nest, drop me a note please!

I hope the grifflets can be set to scale to the character’s level either soon, else for next year. There’s some grumbling by folks who say they won’t come to Ta’Illistim because they are afraid of getting whacked by a critter far, far over their level.

This.

It’s a cool idea, and it was nice to see the Ta’Illistim thought net actually have some activity on it, but if my low-40’s character that hunts Kiramon/Sprites/Bendith can get randomly/unavoidably picked up and dropped in an area with a creature 25 levels over it that it has no chance to survive against? I just won’t be playing that character until the event is over.

Thanks for listening, Valyrka. Even just a “this character is more than 10 levels below Grifflets, so it wont be picked up” flag or something, would work. Scaling would be more fun for the whole family, but I imagine a decent bit tougher to implement.

>Ask ranger about repel

“Funny you should ask that, I do a lot of business this time of year. For a mere xxx silvers I can annoint you with my patent griffin repellent. It makes you smell thoroughly unappetising so they won’t view you as grifflet food. It won’t stop them killing you if you threaten them though. Just GIVE me the silvers.”

>Give xxx silvers to ranger

The smelly ranger takes your silvers and pours a vial over you. You don’t feel hungry any more.

>smell self

A thoroughly unappetising aroma wafts around you. You’d probably struggle to even eat chocolate until it wears off.

The grifflets are missing messaging for when you try to touch/pet them!

I just got snatched by a griffin on my way to rescue someone, really enjoyed the irony and the loresong on the this shield I found, nice work Valyrka. Hopefully its okay to share it here, if not oopps I didn’t know I couldn’t do that ;-o

a worn and cracked orase heater studded with shards of mithglin

Cut from a single slab of orase, the wood has been marred with deep scratches. The edges show signs of cracking. Slivers of mithglin covering the heater remain sharp although tarnished, a few slightly bend and twisted.

Slowly the world fades away, morphing into a dark mountain peak. A freezing wind wraps around you causing bumps to rise on your skin and your teeth to chatter uncontrollably. Looking about you see yourself standing inside a massive tangle of trees, shrubs, armor, and weapons. Bits of bone and bloody flesh are scattered about. With the loud keen from a creature flying above, the scene disappears.

The bramble once again comes into view. You make out the shape of a giant nest of sorts. Large feathers, tufts of fur, leaves, torn clothing, and other items line the bottom. Centered in the space are several giant eggs, their spotted shells covered with a sheen of frost. The howling wind barely drowns out the sound of wings and a shrill shriek as darkness surrounds you.

A frosty mist clears revealing a giant griffin, its tawny fur shimmering in the icy sunlight. The creature perches on the side of the nest, opens her sharp golden bill and shrieks loudly! As if in response to the sound, one of the large eggs begins to crack, the others quickly following suit. Soon the nest is filled with the shrill cooing and shrieking of newly hatched grifflets. The larger griffin takes to the sky and flies about, encircling the nest as the scene fades away.

Whistling about, the freezing wind swirls flakes of snow through the air as the nest fades into view. The griffin continues circling as a second creature appears, a man clutched in its talons. It lands in the aerie and drops its prize. Quickly the grifflets swarm their prey and tear him to shreds ignoring the screams as their roost is stained crimson. As they finish their meal, the younglings raise their beaks and let loose a shriek. The snow begins to fall in a thick curtain obscuring your view.
