Standing on the balcony, she absently pulls a silken shawl about her shoulders. She gazes out over a city shimmering in alabaster and silver, her grey eyes focused on a distant city. Slender fingers gently stroke a small, vaalin chain link.

“Do I risk my House, my people? Every fiber of my being says I must do whatever is needed to protect them. Yet, how can one not feel pity and compassion for others in such dire need? What I would not give to have you by my side.” She smiles as she blinks her misted eyes.

“Will this disease spread to our people? Is there a cure? How can I help those in need, yet protect those I am sworn to serve?”

She clenches her fists as she turns from the view and slowly walks into her chamber. Moving towards a small gilt table, she glances as the stack of parchment awaiting her attention. Without pausing, she sits in a small cushioned chair and rings a tiny gold bell.

A small boy quickly enters the room and looks at the woman with questioning eyes, “Yes Mirror?”

“Gasen, please call for tea with honey and stir up the fire, I feel a chill in the air.”

Turning to the parchments before her, she hardly notices when the tea arrives. She raises one document after another reading them all carefully before sorting them into stacks. Every so often, she pauses to make a note or pen a letter. Sipping her tea, she closes her eyes, lost in thought.

“The Empire. Curse that terrible place and the hurt they have brought to our people, and to you my love. What if this is just the beginning? These poor souls are not at fault, they are a pawn in a larger game. I have to act, yet I have to keep my people safe. I know what is right, yet duty… always duty… duty that kept us apart until it was too late.” Pausing, she raises her voice, “Well damn duty! Gasen! Gasen!”

The page runs into the chambers startled by the outburst.

“Gasen, I have need of your swift feet.”

She turns to her desk and begins writing furiously. As she folds parchment after parchment she gives the page directions.

“Take this to the Lorekeepers. They are commanded to research this disease and report their findings to me directly. They are to stop all other activities and put all their resources to this task. Search every tome, book, and parchment in our libraries. And this one, take this one to the Elemancers. They are to focus all efforts on this task as well. We need their council and researchers. Now take this one to the healers and herbalists. We command them to gather and create any medicines and potions they feel will ease those afflicted with this terrible illness. We also command them to go to Cysaegir and attend to their needs as best they can until we have some idea of how it is spread and how contagious it is. Next, run to the head of servants and command her to put her workers to gathering food and clothing. At least I can do this… but duty…”

She pauses a moment before handing Gasen one last letter. “Take this one to Commander Murstyr. I wish to help the refugees, but we must keep our people and city safe above all else. He is to set guards to ensure that no one that may carry this illness travels to the city.”

As he small boy runs away from her chambers, she turns back to the balcony and the city.

In the end, there is always duty.
