Baron Dunrith Malwind
Vornavis
Turamzzyrian Empire
8thth day of Eorgaen, in the year 5117

Baron Dunrith,
We have heard of the terrible situations that areas of the Empire find themselves in due to recent in events in your lands. There comes a time in history where those of leadership must put aside differences for the good of all. To this end, We wish to send aid to your people. To initiate such an alliance, We would like to introduce one lady Rohese Bayvel-Timsh’l. We send her as our personal ambassador to the Empire. We ask that you and your Emperor receive her and enter into discussion with her about what aid We may bring to your people. She has our authority to work with yourself any other leaders in the Empire who would accept our assistance in these troublesome times. Please accept her into your court.

Penned by my Hand,
Myasara Illistim
Argent Mirror of Ta’Illistim
Keeper of Knowledge

Rohese ran her finger lovingly across the collection of books stacked neatly on the high shelf. Some were so old that the flimsy spines and covers were scarcely able to contain their precious contents and the titles were faded beyond recognition. It’s here somewhere, I know it is. She paused and pulled out a slim doeskin-covered grimoire entitled “Green Witchcraft”. Quickly scanning the beautifully illustrated pages within, she smiled to herself. This might be of interest to Siierra and Puptilian. Slipping the book into her pocket, she resumed her search.

Climbing higher on the stepladder, she reached up to the topmost shelf and retrieved a small silk-wrapped bundle. She gazed fondly at the small volume nestled in the palm of her hand and carefully opened it. It was one of her most prized possessions but she knew it would probably help with their cause. Stepping down, she sat on a nearby chair and took a moment to peruse a few passages of the ancient elvish prose. Time had certainly taken its toll on the book; the pale silvery text filling the tissue-thin pages within was barely legible but she couldn’t fail to be moved by the poetry of one of her most beloved Illistimi sister-elves.

Grand-daughter of Linsandrych Illistim, Adonethwen was fourth in the dynastic line of Argent Mirrors and the reason Rohese had joined the Order of Lorekeepers. She was renowned for her poetry; most notably the sestina. Surely the Baron would appreciate the significance of this gift and the message it conveys?

Closing the book, Rohese rose to her feet and glanced about her. She would miss the tranquillity of her library but she couldn’t delay her journey any longer. Baron Dunrith Malwind had been made aware of their coming and, with the new year on the horizon, it was time to get back to work.

A few hours later …

Rohese tucked the books into the folds of a velvet gown and closed the lid of her small trunk. Securing the buckles, she called for her chambermaid and gave her some last-minute instructions. Then, donning her longcoat, she stepped outside into the chilly, early morning air and headed west.

Inside a stiff white envelope is a sheet of faintly watermarked vellum bearing the Bayvel family crest.

Lord Aeriadrn Ghaeriden Illistim
Office of the Seneschal
Ta’Illistim Keep
28th day of Lormesta, in the year 5118

Seneschal,

As you are no doubt aware, I am currently in Vornavis at the behest of our beloved Argent Mirror to extend an offer of further assistance to Baron Dunrith Malwind for the many displaced in the Empire’s northern territories. Last night, our party had the opportunity to present the Mirror’s cause to His Excellency at a formal court session. I thought it would be appropriate to send you a brief update of our progress.

I am pleased to report that we have been made to feel very welcome in the freeport and the Baron appears to be open to our proposal. I took it upon myself to bestow the gift we briefly discussed as a token of friendship and symbol of sincerity; it was kindly received.

Whilst the rather tactless reference made by the ICICLE ambassador shortly after to our “fancy garb and lavish gifts” caused some minor consternation within the party and amongst others of our group, I’m fairly sure the gentleman in question didn’t mean to give offence and I wish to reassure the Mirror that it is unlikely to result in a diplomatic incident.

His Lordship, Salnim Malwind, has invited us to discuss the matter further – aid that is, not the momentary lapse in diplomacy on the part of the envoy from the frozen north – and we now await his formal invitation. I shall remain in Vornavis until such meeting has taken place or until the Mirror requests my return.

I am, as ever, the Mirror’s most humble and obedient servant.

High Lady Rohese Bayvel-Timsh’l
Scrivener of Ta’Illistim and Patron of the Displaced

OOC note and disclaimer: I just wanted to say that, despite the lateness of the hour for me, I had so much fun with everyone last night, thank you. You have all reminded me why I love playing GS and Rohese in particular.

I hope Arnylon didn’t mind me mentioning his opening remarks in the letter to the Argent Mirror but, whilst I’m sure he didn’t mean for it to cause offence (or did he?!), it resulted in a few wry comments and considerable amusement among the elven contingent and added an interesting political tangent to the proceedings. I do love a little elven indignation for breakfast!

More please!

Arnylon didn’t consider the Elven contingent at all when he made his comments. He doesn’t know them and pretty much was snoozing during their portion of the proceedings. As a cleric of Charl, Arny isn’t much into riches and wears the same, plain outfit or variations thereof every day. He would find (and has found) it hilarious that a group of Elves would be so self-centered to think he’d even have thought of them beforehand. Now this is not an ‘official’ response to the letter. He finds it amusing that a race that lives thousands of years could be so thin-skinned and assume that they are the center of a giantman’s attentions. So no, Arny wouldn’t take offense to the letter. He does what he always does and didn’t really give it any consideration, as he didn’t consider the Elven diplomats during the court session. He did his job. Any other ambassadors or diplomats from places he’s not assigned really were beneath his thinking.

For clarification, I was actually apologising to you, the player, and not the character in my OOC remarks because I thought it was the courteous thing to do! And I apologise again, to you, the player, if my IC response has negatively impacted you in anyway but Rohese was just being her “thin-skinned” elven self.

>> Any other ambassadors or diplomats from places he’s not assigned really were beneath his thinking.

Knowing a little more now about the character and how he thinks, all I can say is he certainly makes for an interesting choice as the role of diplomat or ambassador. Fun times!

I would hope since those are not publically stated opinions of Arny and are his inner thoughts that haven’t ever been shared in game nor ever will be that enough roleplay decorum will be exercised and that general information will not be brought by others into the game and thank you and others who read it in advance for not blurring the lines.

As far as the whole OOC comment, there’s really nobody in the game who has the ability (besides my wife who also plays) who would have any reason to apologize to me as player. Nobody in game has the ability to make the player upset, despite some really intense and ingenious efforts in the past. Anyway, typically I do not reply to threads I don’t normally read but was directed here by another to read the whole letter thing. This will be my last response on this topic. Good luck in your gaming.
