Estild Fixes bug on Eblade for Runestaff

Hello,

I’m not sure if this is a bug, or something I don’t understand about the mechanics 😉

I’m getting double “the scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some” messaging. This occurs both when it flares and doesn’t, but not on all types of spells. Sometimes the double messaging is stacked, sometimes one is after the initial cast and one is after the flare.

With flare:

You gesture at a flesh golem.
You hurl a seething blast of steam at a flesh golem!
AS: +XXX vs DS: +151 with AvD: +33 + d100 roll: +X = +242
… and hit for 57 points of damage!
The flesh golem grimaces as hot droplets scald its right hand.
The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.

As you hit, your runestaff flares with a burst of fire!

… 30 points of damage!
Burst of flames to left leg burns skin bright red.
The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

You gesture at a tomb troll.
You hurl a seething blast of steam at a tomb troll!
AS: +XXX vs DS: +255 with AvD: +44 + d100 roll: +X = +160
… and hit for 32 points of damage!
A hot gust of vapors to stomach reheats meal.

As you hit, your runestaff flares with a burst of fire!

… 20 points of damage!
Burst of flames to left arm burns skin bright red.
The tomb troll moans in pain as the flames singe her skin!
… 25 points of damage!
Burst of flames to left leg blackens kneecap.

The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.
The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

No flare:

You gesture at a tomb troll.
You hurl a seething blast of steam at a tomb troll!
AS: +XXX vs DS: +234 with AvD: +44 + d100 roll: +XX = +273
… and hit for 95 points of damage!
Accurate steam gust severely burns the tomb troll’s right hand!
The troll’s iron morning star falls to the ground.
The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.
The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

Don’t see the issue with mana leech:

You gesture at a tomb troll.
CS: +XXX – TD: +215 + CvA: +20 + d100: +XX == +108
Warding failed!
A dull grey beam momentarily materializes between you and a tomb troll.
She shakes violently!
You feel a sudden rush of power as you absorb 27 mana!
The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

Anecdotally, the e-blade doesn’t seem to be lasting very long. I’m using a self-cast e-blade on a 1x Runestaff.

Is this a bug, or is something else going on?

# of swings for an eblade = 20 + (MnE Spell ranks * 3)

If you have 15 MnE Spell ranks: 20 + (15 * 3) = 65 swings

Each swing (successful or not) takes one charge.
Also, each successful parry takes one charge.

As for the double instance of seeing:

Hmmm….looks like each “The scintillating red light surrounding the runestaff fades some.” shows up for the initial cast of a spell

Sometimes the message shows up twice at the end of a cast & flare, instead of 1 showing up with the cast and 1 with the flare:

You gesture at a tomb troll.
You hurl a seething blast of steam at a tomb troll!
AS: +XXX vs DS: +255 with AvD: +44 + d100 roll: +X = +160
… and hit for 32 points of damage!

I’m not sure if a charge should be used when the runestaff flares (nor do I know if an actual charge is being used or not). However, from what it looks like, every time the runestaff flares, the messaging looks like it takes a charge as well. But, that would have to be determined by the NIR people to look into if it is a bug or if it is intended.

You can figure out whether the charge usage is accurate or not by logging the entire cast. Grep for the fading, and if it’s fewer than the expected charges then you’ve got a bug; if it’s just dual-messaging but you get full charges, no worries.

But this doesn’t occur on all spells (see the mana leech example above). I haven’t done enough testing to say if the double messaging consistently only occurs on certain spells.

With the weapon, when you swing, you always get a fade: even if you miss (EBP or AS/DS) or it’s ineffectual (such as against undead when not blessed/holy).
