An Eavesdropped Conversation in Icemule

A … concerned … Icemule citizen …happens … to overhear a conversation between Mayor Nihala and Hibbits Hoft behind the Mayor’s cottage through a small opening in a window. You know, she just HAPPENED to be there and she knew the UNLOCK spell and all…

Subj: An eavesdropped conversation
Strolling casually down Spitfire Lane after dinner as she does each evening, a tall, slender, erithian citizen of Icemule Trace braces herself against the billowing snow and frigid, gusting wind.

Suddenly, she happens upon a rather anxious-looking Hibbits Hoft quickly making his way toward Mayor Nihala’s cottage. Like many others in the town right now, she doesn’t quite trust this this man or his erratic actions, but in a flash decides to see what he’s up to. She ducks behind a nearby townhouse until he enters the Mayor’s home and locks the door behind him.

Quickly, she runs up to the cottage, her hastened footsteps muffled by the freshly fallen snow. With a quiet whisper of the Unlock spell, she is able to open the window of the Mayor’s house just enough to overhear bits and pieces of the conversation happening inside. She sees Nihala, awake and sitting on the edge of her bed, still looking weak, but watching Hibbits carefully as he paces back and forth in front of her. She also notices an elongated shadow in one corner. The curious citizen strains to listen to the conversation, her heart pounding loudly and her blood rushing to her ears.

Hibbits says softly, “I’m hearing scattered reports from last night of voices in the shadows… whispered suggestions… even commands… [inaudible] thieves… even SPIES?” His voice grows harsher, almost spitting the final word.

Nihala responds gently to him, “In this cozy town? I find it hard to believe, but with [hushed and incomprehensible]… I just don’t know anymore. What do you [mumbles and long pause]… could they be after it? Did you speak with [whispered name] yet?”

Hibbits replies gently, “Not yet, ma’am… in due time.” He paces a few more times. “These voices… someone wants to open ‘the book.’ [Whispered and inaudible] Nihala, what book?” He puffs nervously on his pipe, the smoke wafting toward the slightly opened window. The erithian eavesdropper tenses up, afraid he will notice the window is barely cracked open.

Nihala gives Hibbits a wary glance and replies, her voice weak but laced with authority, “I am not finished… [long pause with inaudible murmuring].” She takes a shuddering breath, then another before continuing. “This book is best left here for now.. and [harsh whispering] but me. Inform the sentries we need them posted outside. And as for you, Dear Hibbits… no more reading while I [inaudible]… or even when I [hushed words in the halfling tongue]… Is that understood?”

The citizen peeks through the window and sees Hibbits nodding quickly, glancing at the thick yellowed tome near the Mayor’s bed. He bids the Mayor farewell, chewing on his pipe anxiously, and turns to exit the house.

The citizen, having witnessed all this, sneaks around the Mayor’s house to the back, watching Hibbits close and lock the door of the cottage behind him. With a shrill whistle, he summons a halfling Captain and barks some instructions. A few minutes later, a sentry arrives and takes her spot in front of Mayor Nihala’s abode.

When all is relatively calm, the citizen sneaks off, determined to tell her neighbors what has just transpired.
