Take some time to study a character whose roleplaying you admire; start a list of the things they do that you respect and then puzzle out how they accomplish each thing. Deconstructing can be very educational and reveal the simple steps to what looks stunning. When you are done, adapt the ideas to your character. It really is all done one thing at a time.
