Welcome to the TownCrier’s Daily Discord Digest.

In this space, we at the TownCrier will attempt to provide a daily digest of select conversations at the Official GemStone IV Discord server covering a 24-hour period from 10 pm EST the night previous to 10 pm EST of the night listed in the title. Not all conversations will be (nor can be) reported and we will endeavor to utilize a neutral tone (although our unique senses of humor may show through).

Links may go to the Official Discord post itself, to the GemStone IV Wiki, or other useful and relevant places. In the case of Discord links, those links will send you to the Discord web interface. If you are not signed in, you will need to be signed in to see them.

The digest was created by and is edited by the player of Qafziel Nalfein/Darcena Wolf-Valslayer – Jen. Have an error to report on this digest or some information to pass along? Contact Jen on Discord at ArmyJen#0001 or e-mail her. Please reference which digest day to which you are referring.

General Gemstone IV

#premium

In a discussion on how QC has changed over the years, GM Avaluka stated, “But bathing suits/bathing costumes are definitely a ‘no’ now. Apparently “sequins” are okay, so I suppose so.” She added, “We’re supposed to stick around the 1700s-ish or earlier. But there are some things that kind of got in a long time ago that are more modern, that probably wouldn’t fly now.”

#mechanics

Avaia asked, “Sephwir Shortbow vs unsighted 5x Longbow for a mid-40s Ranger. Long bow shoots sniping aimed in 6s. Which is preferable?” There was quite a bit of discussion on this and on crossbows, to which GM Naijin added, “for the weak folks – don’t underestimate the mechanical xbows”

Maodan asked, “Is there a verb to force a body down the mountain in Griffin’s Keen so that they can be dragged through a wizard portal?”

Melivn asked GMs to upate or fix the problem where individuals are spending cash on Ithzir armor, an end game armor, but the escape tree doesn’t work in almost every end game hunting ground. He also suggested being able to turn off the escape function.

Ondreian, Midgar, and other players had a conversation on how to improve and balance melee in the game. There were quite a few gems in it.

Ondreian summarized:

This is how I’d fix squares:

1. baseline RT should be 3 seconds for all attacks, not 5

2. add weapon base effects

3. add skill trees to Weapon Skills, Dodging, TWC, etc

4. all squares should be able to 3x PF

5. stamina pools should be equivalent to pure mana pools

6. stop talking about how OP cmans are, none of them are really useful, I use 1 cman in 10 hunts maybe

GM Naijin reframed the “monk’s make better rogues than rogues” discussion point when he said, “Rogues are based around stealth, ambushing, agility, dexterity, etc. A monk encompasses some of that but they’re certainly not better rogues than rogues. If you wanna say monks kill faster than rogues or hunt more effectively than rogues then sure, I can buy that.”

GM Naijin disagreed that rogues should have 2x MOC and explained, “They’re specialist in single combat. If you start taking away the things that make a class a class you eventually end up with a very boring homogenized system where choices don’t really matter because at the end everyone is the same thing.” and he added, “Rogues aren’t meant to be dipping and diving out in the open between multiple opponents. The costs there are, imho, completely justified.”

Midgar stated, “My biggest issue with Slippery Mind / Kroderine, is they only work with CS spells.” GM Estild responded that opponents can just evade the bolts and GM Naos responded that “if the fire hits you it doesn’t matter how greased up your brain bits are.” Midgar replied, “I understand the realism aspects of it. It’s just a shame, because it makes them not so useful”

GM Estild stated in response, “I don’t think that’s what’s holding them back.” and “Avoiding 27% of a potentially devastating attack just means you’ll get lucky 1 out of 3 casts. The other 2 casts, you’re potentially dead or your hunt is over.” He summarized, “That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with random defensive benefits. It just means that particular application isn’t good.”

FarFigNewGut stated, in response to a previous conversation, “catching up: UAC does have to deal with EBP (ebp chance is factored into the MM calculation for a target).” He added, “it’s part of the calculation, all things being equal if something has a greater EBP chance against you, your MM will be lower. i don’t know that anyone has a great idea of the exacts. there is no outright block chance, it just reduces your chance to hit via the MM calculation. you might still consider that superior (i do, cause EBP suuuuuuuuux), but it’s not outright ignored. just different.”

Confluence Tactics. BobN asked, “Any tips for wizard or warrior confluence hunting at 80 (other than get levels?). Cool area but I get destroyed by anything I face. Any tactics that can give me a shot at those levels?”

FarFigNewGut asked if BobN knew how to work the dispel mechanics and BobN replied, “Outside spells stripped on entry, so spellup inside? You want them to miss but not by too much or they strip spells?”

FarFigNewGut replied, “yeah the later part, double checking you knew to maintain a stance above what you might normally so they are less likely to strip you. other than that….uh, fire the cold things cold the fire things, pray  what’s your RT for moving rooms? i never touched that place till i had like 100+ survival/climb/swim cause f that”

Tsalin aka Jeff added, “gonna be hard unless you can kill them when they enter the room, before they can maneuver you. when i started I would PEER every room and only enter safe rooms, then try and corner them and wait for them to enter the room so I could always guarantee to kill them before they attacked. which is actually harder on the cold side because air elementals are very fast (low action timer) compared to everything else. i’ve been hunting there since level 90 with 50 survival and 50 climbing – it’s annoying but not that bad” He added, “they do a ton of maneuvers so if you are underhunting, you need a way to kill them before their action timer from entering the room is up…so about 3 seconds. or a way to put them in RT like 711 or feint, which would be pretty hard at 80 i think”

Ragz advised, “Confluence was the last capped hunting ground I explored because it seemed like the most dangerous.. finding an exit was one of the things I remember being a concern.. most of your escape abilities will teleport you within a room of the exit.. gold rings work within the area but they’re really only useful for getting to one side or the other when you first get inside”

Kroderine. Shield asked, “Mechanics question… can kroderine be blessed or sancted?” The answer was no.

Mage Armor. Ashraam asked, “I dont understand why mage armor doesn’t provide elemental resistance.” GM Estild responded, It provides resistance to every damage type.”

BobN asked, “do you mean 520 provides crit padding against all damage, or resistance? I never saw anything before that indicated 520 gave any form of resistance. That would be sweet!” GM Estild responded, “I meant resistance as the general term since crit padding protects against all damage types”

#help

GM Contemplar replied to someone talking about what crystals to use for sprite/parasite bows and stated, “for reference the crystals in order of lesser to greater is: ayanad, s’ayanad, t’ayanad and n’ayanad. at least as far as alchemy is concerned…”

#alteration-help

GM Avaluka said, “I suppose you could also have a coat with split tails or something, too. I suspect it’s the noun [tailcoat] that’s just a no-no, not the style.” She added, “I said this in the other channel .. but … I can’t be sure, but research on the interwebs says the term ‘tailcoat’ did not come around until 1847, and usually a loose-ish guideline is to try to keep terms to around the 1700s. I’m guessing that may be the issue, but I’m not the one making such decisions.”
